mark211Most interesting families and 'anti-families' in SFF fiction?2015-12-13 04:44:19
mark211As many people around the world will soon be re-uniting with their families, whether that's for Christmas or New Year, now seems as good a time as any to think about the way families - and alternatives to the family - have been portrayed in the best of Science Fiction and Fantasy.2015-12-13 04:46:57
mark211There are countless examples in Fantasy fiction of course - very often a hero's quest is prompted by a debt of family honour (e.g. Thorin Oakenshield, son of Thráin, son of Thrór, King under the Mountain who appears in 'The Hobbit'); Bruce Wayne and Peter Parker are both prompted by a mixture of revenge and debt of honour to take the guises of Batman and Spiderman respectively. Similar things can be said of Paul Atriedes / Muad'Dib in 'Dune'. And many alternatives to the 'traditional' family are to be found in Science Fiction - Huxley's 'Brave New World' is a great example of this.2015-12-13 04:54:28
mark211So - what are the most interesting families and 'anti-families' in fiction? And what are your own ideas for possible alternatives to the nuclear family? Will there even be a nuclear family as we know it today in the far future?2015-12-13 04:55:41
RTThe Adams Family!!!!!2015-12-13 11:40:26
SiturcThe Smith Family in John Ringo's "Black Tide Rising" series or The Shackleford Family in Larry Correia's "Monster Hunter Int'l" series. and Yes the Adams Family or the Munsters.2015-12-13 18:55:04
RTone more , Mine, without a doubt.2015-12-14 06:34:47
micheledutcherAs far as the Star Wars sequel coming out soon to a theater near you, how about Luke Skywalker following in his father's footsteps and going over to the dark side of the force. It makes sense because there were twins born - Princess Leah and Luke Skywalker - the light side and the dark side born as twins - balance in the Force. Nice! 2015-12-15 06:18:03
mark211@RT Ha ha ha - to both your comments there. Without doubt, my favourite Addams' cartoon is this one: 'Uncle Fester at the movies' [https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/c0/67/cd/c067cdae63583e16104170a501d5d043.jpg] - it's a sublimely brilliant image. Also no what you mean about 'mine' - the same applies to me, even the referent is quite different. 2015-12-15 08:19:01
mark211@Siturc - Could you tell us a bit more about the Smith's or the Shackleford's? I don't know of either so am not sure in what way they're different.2015-12-15 08:19:54
mark211@Michele - Like it, but does that need a plot SPOILER alert? ; - )2015-12-15 08:20:21
micheledutcherNope, no spoiler alert needed because no one has seen the movie yet - but I'd bet RT's salary on it - Luke Skywalker turns into a Darth Vader-like person. I'm just figuring it out. We'll all know the truth on Friday? Md2015-12-16 06:52:49
rtoh really? rt2015-12-17 13:18:15
