The Future of Quantum Muse
by Michael Gallant
Today, Quantum Muse stands at a crossroads. Not, surprisingly,
that we may sell our souls to the Devil at midnight.
No we stand here today and wonder what the zine will look like in
months to come.
Raymond M Coulombe, a founder and original editor, has bowed out
of the zine. This means he's roughly 6 years slower on the uptake than
Tim Goyette, but still smarter than I.
I am determined to keep the site going, but I'm not exactly sure
how that's going to happen. I want to thank everyone who offered help.
I will very likely take some of you up on it, once I look around and
see where it's most needed.
The biggest immediate change is that I will be putting QM out as
a bimonthly publication for a while at least, to get my bearings on
how to budget the time for the reading, acceptances, formatting, etc,
and to see how anyone whose help I accept works out. Typical of creative
people, I am bad at organization and deadlines, but a fussy, pain- in-
the- ass perfectionist who's difficult to work with, so it's more likely
to be me who is the problem than those of you who offered help.
The more subtle change is unfortunate but inevitable. Being the
sole editor will change the flavor of the zine, regardless of how much
I try not to. When Ray and I were doing it, we had a balance, we were
able to look at things from two perspectives and judge depth better
than any one person can. He often championed stories I wouldn't have
accepted, and often these were big hits with our readers. I sometimes
latched onto a piece and just annoyed him until he agreed to let me
publish it, and sometimes I was right about those.
Now that it's all me, well, I like to think I'm open to new experiences
enough to keep a variety of fiction here.
But it's hard to know that about your own judgement.
There it is. I don't know how qualified I am to keep this thing
moving, but so long as you keep reading, I'll try not to pile us up
on the rocks.
