A Clear Headed Look at the State
of Things
by Raymond M. Coulombe
We are quite mad. Passionately, creatively, powerfully mad. That's
why we publish Quantum Muse. That my friends, is the way to get
ahead in life. What? Did you think progress was made by sane rational
steady people? No folks, the best stuff in the world comes from us madmen.
Sanity just gives you the same old crap. It's worse than that. Sanity
is the mark of stability. Stability is the mark of stasis. Stasis is
death. Those of our readers who've had the misfortune to live in a "planned"
society know what I'm talking about. People want to have a little fun
once in a while, and not just the sort of fun our mothers approve of.
Passion is the fuel that keeps us going, the power behind the pen.
We play hard, love with wild abandon, and take big bites out of life.
That's the sort of passion that scares planners. Remember those kids
in school who never got laid? A lot of them now work in government.
That's why things from the government are so colorless and boring.
NASA is full of sane people, scared of blowing stuff up. I figure
that attitude set spaceflight back 100 years. Come on folks, spaceflight
is supposed to be nuts. Logic and sanity will never get you off the
ground. What we need is to take a bunch of engineers, drunk on cheep
beer and wild ideas, to come up with a mad idea like a cheap faster-than-light
drive. Chicks dig faster than light drives. Invent one, and I guarantee
no matter how nerdy your are, you will get laid.
The Sufi claim that a focused mind is the most powerful force in
the universe. I like that idea, it's a good place to start, but the
power, the voltage and amperage behind that idea is emotion. You've
got to believe in what you focus on. When you feel that power, the power
of joy, of life, the passion beyond logic and reason, then my friends,
you know you are onto something good. Better yet, everyone around it
feels it too, and if they have even a speck of soul, they will get behind
it too. The universe loves that sort of passion. What else would you
expect from a universe created by a big bang?
Why am I telling you this? I want to live in a world where people
know their own power. Where they are not afraid to take a wild idea
and run with it. I want cool things, like rocket ships and intelligent
robots. I want a system of magick that works, every time. I want the
whole human race to burst out into the greater universe so we can discover
new things to be passionate about. It's about freedom. I figure we are
just short of reaching it. We are close. We have rock and roll, high
speed computers, and Quantum Muse.
From our submissions, we see that the spark of life is still out
there. We know that people have some strong desires. Run with them my
friends, run with them. If your neighbors thing you are a bit off, chances
are you are doing the right thing. Sure, you might fail, but so what?
You are only a failure if your accept the definitions of your neighbors.
True madmen never do, so as long as they succeed by their own definitions,
they are a success. Neat how that works, isn't it? Ok, maybe it's crazy,
but I never claimed to be anything but. Party on gentle readers, party
on.
